Educational Tips

Safety Tips

DEFENSIVE DRIVING:

To avoid crashes, the defensive driver should:

  1. Stay alerted and keep eyes moving to keep track of what is happening at all times.

  2. Look for trouble spots developing all around.

  3. Have a plan of actions

  4. Know that the law requires drivers to protect each other from their own mistakes

SAFETY BELTS:

The driver and all passengers, regardless of age, in a passenger vehicle are required to use safety belts if occupying a seat in a vehicle equipped with safety belt. Any child under 8 years old must be secured in a federally approved child car seat if occupying a seat in a vehicle equipped with safety belt, unless the child is more than 4’9” tall.

Safety belt requirements include pickups, SUVs, and trucks. Safety belts help keep you:

  1. From being thrown from your car. Your chances of being killed are five times greater if you are thrown from your car.

  2. From hitting the dashboard too hard

  3. In better control of your car

Whatever your reason for not wearing safety belts, it is dangerous and violates state law.

Penalties for Driving Without a Safety Belt:

A driver can receive a citation for not wearing his/ her safety belt and for not having each child under the age 17 in a safety seat or safety belt. Anyone who is at least 15 years of age can receive a citation for not wearing a safety belt. There are no exemptions or to the safety belt laws. However, there are some defenses to prosecution for postal workers, individuals who deliver the newspaper, utility workers, certain commercial farm vehicle operators, or medical reasons with a physician’s note.

When stopped by law enforcement:

If you are stopped by the law enforcement it is suggested you:

  1. Move the vehicle safety to the right of the road as soon as possible and stop

  2. Place the vehicle in a parking position, set the emergency brake, turn the engine off, and activate the hazard warning lights

  3. Remain in the car, lower the driver’s window, and wait for the law enforcement officer to give instructions

  4. Follow  the instructions of the law enforcement officer

  5. Require passengers to remain in the car unless other instructions are given by the law enforcement officer, and

  6. Give the appropriate signals and safely return to the proper lane of traffic when released by the law enforcement officer

False Identification Offense:

A person commits an offense if he/she gives a false or fictitious name to a law enforcement officer who has lawfully arrested or detained the person.

Speed Limits:

Drivers are required to obey posted minimum and maximum speed limits. These limits are designed to provide for orderly flow of traffic under normal driving conditions. During periods of heavy traffic, bad weather, low visibility, or other poor driving conditions, you must adjust your speed and following distance to help avoid crashes.

Fight Highway Hypnosis:

A condition of drowsiness or unawareness can be brought on by reduced activity and steady sounds of wind, engine, and tire hum. This is known as highway hypnosis. All drivers should be aware of its danger and of the methods for fighting it.

  1. Stop often. Even if you are feeling well you should stop at least every two hours or 100 miles. Get out of your car and walk around. Allow your muscles to relax.

  2. Do not drive more than eight hours per day.

  3. Keep shifting your eyes. Look at the different object; near and far, left and right. Read the road signs as you approach them. Check your rearview mirror.

Highway Safety Tips:

  1. Keep a window open so there is always fresh air in the car to help you alert and awake.

  2. On bright days, wear good sunglasses. Never wear sunglasses at night.

  3. Stay out of another driver’s blind spot.Traveling where the driver ahead of you cannot see your vehicle can be dangerous. Stay behind or go around the other vehicle. Do not follow to the side.

  4. Avoid using a cell phone while driving; use may cause distraction and inattention. If you must use a cell phone, safely pull off the road or use a hands free device except in the case of emergency.

Teen Driver's Ed

Graduated Driver Licensing

Crashes are the number one killer of teens.

Texas Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) laws are designed to prevent teen crashes by giving new drivers the chance to gain experience and improve their driving skills over time in lower- risk environments.

Spell Out TheRules : The risks teen face in the driving environment are huge! Parents and guardians need to teach safe driving behaviors from the beginning. So before obtaining the provisional license is the time to develop the Parent - Teen Driving Agreement to outline expectations and set consequences if the expectations are not followed. For example agreements, check with your insurance agency.

After getting the license  it is still marked provisional until the individual turns 18.

* Provisional license (drive solo)

*  No driving  between midnight and am.

* No more that one passenger under the age 21.

* No wireless communication devices, hands- free or not.

* Wear seatbelt, its the law.

Students between the ages of 15 years to 17 years of age are required to complete the teen course in order to obtain their license. The state requires 32 hours of instruction in the class and 14 hours of instruction behind the wheel. During the fourth day of class, we administer the written test. Upon passing, the student will receive a certificate that allows him or her to apply for the permit. After obtaining your permit the student is still required to complete the remaining hours of the class, however, they may also begin to schedule their driving classes outside of class time. Once all 32 hours of class and driving class hours have been completed, the student will receive a second certificate, which will allow the student to obtain a license. To obtain a license, the student must be at least 16 years of age and have his or her permission for a minimum of 6 months.

Classes are from Monday to Thursday, 2 hours each day for 4 weeks.

Driving times can be programmed according to the student's schedule. Students leave in groups of two with one of our instructors. Each student makes one hour of driving and one to observe during driving.
